Color is fundamental to the cinematic experience; it immerses us in the imagined world of film, creates emotional connections, and transports us to different times and places. Jim Dukes, Senior Product Manager at Christie Cinema, spoke in a media interview about the characteristics of laser and xenon lamp light sources and how they affect color differently. We are sharing that interview here.

The color capacity occupied by Rec.2020, DCI-P3, and Rec.709 in the CIE 1931 table. The CIE 1931 table includes all colors visible to the human eye.


This standard is maintained by the International Commission on Illumination.


The three color gamuts define distinct color spaces. The Rec.709 color gamut was designed for high-definition television and video production, covering 35.9% of the CIE 1931 color space.


In 2005, DCI developed the DCI-P3 color gamut specifically for digital projection, which covers 53.6% of CIE 1931—almost 20% more than Rec.709. The more recent Rec.2020 is an extended color gamut that covers 75.8% of CIE 1931, making it significantly wider than the DCI-P3 gamut.


In comparison to Rec.709, the DCI-P3 color gamut features different primary colors, with deeper reds and more vibrant greens. This results in colors that are more saturated and vivid, resembling those perceived by the human eye. Currently, most cinemas use the DCI-P3 standard color gamut for movie presentations.

Xenon lamps have been the primary light source in cinemas for nearly 75 years. Their unique performance produces natural white light very close to the DCI-P3 color gamut. With only minor color gamut correction, xenon lamps easily achieve cinema-standard DCI-P3 color and maintain this standard consistently under varying light intensities, even as the bulb ages.


However, xenon lamps cannot achieve a wider color gamut like Rec.2020.


RGB Pure Laser Light Source


The industry is rapidly shifting to RGB pure laser light sources for projection, and with this shift, the color gamut has been significantly improved. RGB pure laser projectors cover 98% of the Rec.2020 color gamut, and this ultra-wide color gamut greatly improves the screen image. While the initial introduction of the DCI-P3 color gamut brought stunning results and improved the viewing experience, RGB pure laser reshapes the viewing experience with rich, saturated colors that are closer to the colors we see in everyday life.


Projectors equipped with red, green, and blue laser light sources can display the widest color gamut currently available. While projectors that replace one or more laser primary colors with phosphors (such as Christie's New World projectors) cannot achieve the full extended RGB color gamut, their colors are still significantly enhanced compared to xenon lamps.

A wider color gamut is essential in the film industry and significantly enhances image quality in cinemas. It’s crucial to understand that expanding the color gamut truly improves image quality only when it is paired with the right combination of resolution, brightness, contrast, and content.


Color serves as a powerful narrative tool; it affects audience reactions and shapes their emotional connection to what they see on screen. While DCI-P3 is currently the standard for cinema color, the Rec.2020 color gamut makes images appear brighter and more vibrant. This can evoke stronger emotional responses and help audiences become more immersed in the cinematic experience.
